Psalm 111:9-10
“He has sent redemption to His people; He has ordained His covenant forever; Holy and awesome is His name. (10) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever.
In the Bible, “forever” can mean “without end” or it can mean “as long as conditions exist.” In Psalm 111:1-10, it appears, that the psalmist is talking about a covenant, commandments, and about righteousness that endure forever. In six out of ten verses, various words indicate “time without end” and reinforce “forever and ever.”
The covenant spoken of appears to be the New Covenant, the one that will endure forever, as opposed to the Old Covenant made in the Old Testament. In Hebrews 8:13, the writer makes the statement “… ‘A new covenant,’ He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away“. It is noteworthy, that God’s commandments are connected to the covenant that will last forever. The commandments are definitely not done away with the coming of the New Covenant. In this Psalm, God says that His commandments are not done away with the coming of a covenant that will last forever.
Cultural Christianity in our society teaches a theology that states the Old Covenant is done away and so are God’s law. Their teaching continues by stating that a reason it had to be done away is that God’s law is too difficult to keep, as well as harsh and enslaving to individuals. Due in part to the human nature with mankind, this theology essentially shifts the blame for the failure in keeping the commandments of God, in effort to justify mankind’s conduct.
